Some terms below you may be familiar with while others maybe not so familiar. Either way they are here for you learning pleasure.
Social Media – According to Wikipedia social media is information …”created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies.” usually over the internet or mobile and combines technology, social interation on telecommunications. Basically they are talking about site like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter even Linked In to name a few. You may have heard of some or all of these. If you havn’t – get browsing.
Twitter -A social networking site. Not to be confused with twit (a silly or annoying person – websters). Basically, Twitter allows users to post comments, or insight as often as they like. All posts must be 140 words are less. Users can subscribe to feeds they enjoy or browse and bookmark feeds that may be of interest.
Blog – a type of website that is usually displayed in a news like format. They are typically run by individuals although they can be run my companies and groups of contributing individuals. Blogs are easy to use and a popular and growing form of communications.
ftp – stands for file transfer protocol. More importantly, it’s how files are transferred between and onto websites.
CMS - Content Management System – quite simply – it’s a system to manage your web content. Basically, this is a type of website that owners or individuals who know nothing about web design can update themselves.
Hosting – hosting it space you purchase so that your website appears online. All online sites require a hosting plan unless you piggyback off someone elses site. Piggybacking is not recommended for business sites. I recommend getting your own host and your own domain name.
Domain Names – Domain names are the actual name of a website. ex: www.yourwebsite.com
SEO – stands for search engine optimization which is the process of optimizing websites so that they are the most search engine friendly they can be (so they show up on Google and other popular search engines.)
RSS - Stands for real simple syndication. It’s a device that feeds news sources that are updated frequently. RSS enables websites, media outlets and people to follow news, blogs, videos that are constantly being updated with out the need for updating. Simply subscribe to the feed and your set.
