Appliances
If it's been a while since you've shopped for appliances you're in for a pleasant surprise. Appliances have come a long way. In fact, many of the features available today were not on the market as little as 5 years ago. The new breed of residential appliances include features that were once only available to commercial kitchens such as combination convection/steam ovens, cooktop griddles and built in deep fryers. Washing machines can be programmed to focus on a particular stain and refrigerators now come with a built in computer or flat screen TV.

Aside from features, appliances have flourished in the style category as well. Finishes can be found in brushed stainless and titanium to mint julep and styles include commercial, retro, European and traditional. Of course, if you prefer not to look at your appliances, you have the option of integrating them into the cabinetry.

Maybe so, but basic planning and some simple wants and needs evaluations are keys to successful kitchen design. While the explosion of designer kitchen products available today is exciting, it's easy to find yourself wanting too much and quickly becoming overwhelmed.

Start with the basics. Consider your space. What is the layout you are working with? Are you thinking of expanding? Or are you sticking with the current floor plan? What is your style? Traditional? Contemporary? What elements do you need in your kitchen and what elements do you want? Needs take priority to wants so identifying them will save you time and trouble. Think about your likes and dislikes. Considering both will help you narrow the scope of options.

Above all, enjoy your self. The kitchen is the heart of the home and its inspiration should come from there.
